Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course concentrates on the key components of the non-traditional threats which are being originated, formed and shaped due to a number of various reasons motivated by a qualitatively new period in the development of international relations, of the balance of powers, of science and technology, of the life science, as well as by profound changes in the social, economic and cultural life of the human civilization. The course reveals the various forms of the manifestation of these new – non-traditional threats and the main consequences for global, regional and national security of the states. The course defines the characteristic factors which make non-traditional threats different from traditional ones both by the nature of the threats, the forms and the scale of their manifestations as well as the significance of their consequences.

  • The aim of the course – obtaining by students on a system basis the notion on the main non-traditional threats for the regional and global security and the mechanisms of their neutralization. As a result of the mastery of the discipline students ought to understand the reasons of the rise of the modern non- traditional threats for the international security, to know the principle conceptual approaches towards the analysis of these threats; to be capable to prepare the brief analytical reports with practical recommendations (policy brief) in the interests of the state power structures and intergovernmental organizations. To successfully comprehend the course it is mandatory to preliminary get knowledge on such disciplines as «The theory of international relations», «The history of international relations», «The modern international relations». The discipline is presented in an internal format.

  • Theme 2. International terrorism.
  • Theme 3. New aspects of military security and new threats. Piracy and private military (intelligence) companies.
  • Theme 4. Non military aspects of international security. Illegal migration as a new securitization factor.
  • Theme 5. The economic Warfare
  • Theme 6. The problems of combating non -traditional challenges and threats under the conditions of science and technological revolution.
  • Тheme 7. Climate change, energy resources gap. The threat of geoengineering.
  • Тheme 8. Human and community security threats.
