Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course for third- and fourth-year BAE students dives deeply into theories about writing and creativity. Students will read and discuss texts from both scholarly and popular writers who talk about their writing processes and philosophies. Topics of focus will include the writing process, revision, consideration of audience, source use, and the potential of generative AI tools. Students will produce a statement of their own writing philosophy as well as apply the theories discussed in class to an ongoing project of their own.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • The overall goal of this class is for each student to learn to be a better writer, that process also involves learning to be a better reader, better thinker, and better builder of arguments. Inappropriate use of digital tools–including online translation tools (such as those offered by Google, Yandex, and others.) and generative AI (Chat GPT, etc)--interrupts this process of learning.
