Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course covers topics: Growth Theory and the Poverty Trap Pathology, Imperial History, Geopolitics and Long Run Development, Optimal and Endogenous Growth, Political Economy of Natural Resources, Economics of Conflict, Aid Effectiveness: Sceptics vs Believers, Trade Openness, Growth and Poverty, Debt and Development. The course is conducted with https://online.hse.ru/local/showcase/?cid=3485 The course analyzes challenges faced by transition and emerging-market economies, i.e., those middle- and low-income countries, which have conducted market-oriented economic reforms and become integrated into the global economy since 1990s. The course discusses the use of machine learning methods for forecasting macroeconomic variables and economic growth parameters, which is achieved level DC 0.0.2.

Learning Objectives

  • The overall aim of this course is to equip students with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to work effectively as economists in economic policy related activities. Specifically, the aims of the course are, • to provide students with a basic knowledge of the key structural features of transitional and emerging market economies; • to enhance students’ understanding of the contribution which economic analysis can make in analysing key problems and policy issues faced by these economies; • to equip students with the analytical tools needed for this purpose.
