Course Syllabus
Abstract
Performance lies in the core of Indian culture and manifests itself at all stages of its development, in different forms—from early Vedic rituals and ancient Sanskrit theatre to the present-day street plays and Bollywood blockbusters.
The course offers a concise history of performance in India: it examines some aspects of ancient Vedic rituals, tests the idea of ritualistic origin of theatre, takes a closer look at the most important theoretical concepts developed in the Nāṭya Śāstra, considered the oldest existing treatise on theatre art. Participants will learn about various forms of theatre and dance that still exist in India today, examine the relationship between theatre and cinema. The final lectures of the course will be dedicated to many-faceted and vibrant cinematography, which is often seen as a rightful successor to the classical performance tradition of India.
