Course Syllabus
Abstract
MSc Mentor’s seminar is a compulsory part of the curriculum of the ICEF master’s programme “Financial Economics” for the 1st and 2nd year students. The main goals of the seminar is to develop students' critical and analytical skills, acknowledge them with the modern trends in the sphere of Economics and Finance, to help them in their professional orientation. It is built on interactive learning approaches, where the audience is constantly involved in the discussion process. The seminar is conducted in English during the academic year. It consists in a series of round tables on modern economic and financial topics with visiting experts’ participation and mentor’s meetings with students.
Learning Objectives
- The student should be able to apply professional knowledge and skills acquired while studying the course in practical areas, including academic research, work in financial institutions, industry, and public governance.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- - to acquaint students with contemporary topics in Finance and Economics,
- - to assist students in Professional orientation
- - to develop students' critical and analytical thinking and ability to express their ideas
- - to develop students’ academic writing skills
- - to develop their presentation skills and abilities to participate in the discussions

- Round table discussion1st year students requirement is to visit at least 4 seminars out of 6 besides introduction seminar. At the Round tables, visiting expert gives a 30 min introduction sharing his/her experience and then organizes a discussion with students based on mini cases. The indicative topics of the round tables are: Cryptocurrencies and digital assets: markets, trading, future prospectives Technological startups and entrepreneurship Financial markets under restricted capital flows, effect of sanctions and CBR policy Import substitution and development of Russian economy Direct Investment vs Venture capital funding/ Unicorns Inflation acceleration in the developed countries Climate change, ESG policies and financial regulations Unconventional energy: current situation and future Business development in Russia and other regions of the world (e.g. Africa and Asia) Leadership and cultural patterns 2nd year students requirement is to visit at least 2 round tables and act as a jury meneber at least at 1. Visiting expert gives a business case task to the team of students in at least 2 weeks before the Round table. In the beginning of the Round table the visiting expert gives a 15 min introduction sharing his/her experience and then organizes a discussion with the students. A team of students prepares a solution to the business case and gives a presentation during the Round table, while another team of students together with the visiting expert act as a jury. Other students can participate in the discussion. The indicative topics of the round tables are: Fintex and financial services prospective Technological startups and entrepreneurship Financial markets under restricted capital flows, effect of sanctions and CBR policy Import substitution and development of Russian economy Direct Investment vs Venture capital funding/ Unicorns Inflation acceleration in the developed countries Climate change, ESG policies and financial regulations Unconventional energy: current situation and future Business development and Mergers&Acquisitions in Russia and worldwide
