Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course offers an in-depth examination of the military policy and military-industrial complex issues. The course will focus on the analysis of strategic planning in the military-economic development and the structures of the military-industrial complex of foreign countries. The course will cover different aspects of the public-private partnership in the production, procurement and delivery of weapons and military equipment. A further concentration of the course is the global arms exports. Among other issues, the course will examine the technological revolution in military affairs and the new arms race both on earth and in outer space.

- To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, challenges and current trends in the military policy and military-industrial complex issues.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- - To analyse the process of shaping the military economy from its origins to the present. - To explain the importance of strategic planning for ensuring the defence capability. - To explain the peculiarities of the defence allocations considering the economic capabilities of the countries.
- - To explain the structure of the military-industrial complex. - To assess the production capabilities of the military-industrial sector of foreign countries. - To describe the structure and peculiarities of the global arms trade. - To acquaint oneself with contemporary issues in the military economy.
- - To analyse the reasons for development of public-private partnerships in the defence sector. - To highlight key trends in the production and employment of the high-tech defence equipment. - To analyse the impact of the high-tech arms race on international security and future warfare.

Assessment Elements
- News brief10%. All students are expected to present a news brief on military-industrial policy and defence economics. At the beginning of each class, the news brief is presented by two students within a maximum time limit of 10 minutes.
- Presentation25%/ As part of the assessment elements, the students are expected to conduct research and present their findings using PowerPoint or similar presentation tools. There can be two types of presentations: (individual or group (no more than 3 students)). The type of presentation (either group or individual) is determined at the teacher's discretion. The time-limit is 15 mins + Q&A session. Students are responsible for selecting the topic. The topic must be agreed upon with the teachers of the course in advance.
- In-class participation25%. All students are expected to attend seminars and participate by listening attentively and contributing to discussions. Students’ statements and answers to questions must contain well formulated arguments that clearly show their position. To do this, students must demonstrate a quality preparation for the seminar: do their homework, read the assigned literature and be ready to perform a critical evaluation of it. The students are expected to reflect on the questions and the literature assigned.
- Final examThe final assessment is conducted in the form of a traditional oral exam. The exam questions will be distributed to students ahead of the exam session week. There will be one question based on the topics of the lectures and one based on the presentation (cases). The examiner reserves the right to ask questions. Students are allocated no more than 30 minutes to prepare. The use of notes, literature, or mobile devices is not allowed.
