Course Syllabus

Abstract

Technological innovation is a fundamental driver of competitiveness in the global markets. Thus, its management is one of the most important and challenging tasks of international companies. It encompasses all the activities necessary for the introduction of new and improved products and services into the market, particularly on the basis of new knowledge and technology. It is a cross-functional task, affecting all departments of a company: from R&D, over production, to marketing. Furthermore, management of technological innovation reaches out to the company’s external environment, to the network of different players – users, customers, suppliers or cooperation partners. Built on an effective balance between the state-of-the-art research and managerial practice, the course Management of Technological Innovation is designed to explain the nature of innovation and navigate among the variety of innovation strategies, tools and concepts. As such, it will enable students to deal with the challenges of the global business environment, engendered by uncertainty and complexity of dynamic markets.

  • The aims and objectives of the course Management of Technological Innovation are to provide students with: (1) a comprehensive overview of the key concepts related to innovation and technological development; (2) a holistic perspective on the development of technological innovation strategy considering the company’s position in the global market, its previous technological trajectories and current innovation processes; (3) an integrative understanding of the functional issues associated with the creation of an innovative organization in the dynamic international environment.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Team project presentation
    Team project presentation: 20 points During the course students will be required to form teams (3-4 students) for their team projects. Each team will choose a different company from the BCG list of the 50 most innovative companies. Teams will be required to: (1) identify paths (i.e., technological trajectories) that the company has been following so far; (2) analyse the company’s position in dynamic global market; (3) identify the processes that the company uses to manage technological innovation. Students are required to submit their team project presentations and jointly present their work. Project work that is not submitted and/or presented will not be graded. Points earned for team project presentation are a team grade. Individual grade for these assignments will be recalculated on the basis of the peer evaluation (i.e., evaluation of team members’ contribution to the assignment). Students who do not submit their evaluation forms by deadline will be considered to have contributed 0% to the team project and receive ZERO points for it. NOTE: There is no retake for this assignment. Students who do not join a team will not be able to earn points for team project presentation. This is a teamwork and cannot be completed individually.
  • non-blocking Individual report
    Individual report: 60 points Building upon their team project, students (individually) will be required to write an individual report and make recommendations for future innovation strategy of the company they chose and focused on in their team project presentations. Their recommendations should consider strategic aspects previously discussed in the team project (i.e., paths, position and processes) in more detail. Individual student must offer his/her own perspective in the report. Even though the members of the same team will focus on the same company, reports made by the individual team members must be essentially different. NOTE: Retake will be organized in the form of the exam based on open-ended questions. Students choose 3 out 4 offered questions and provide their response in the written format. Each response brings max 20 points out of 60 points in total for the exam. Duration of the exam is 120 minutes. Exam will be organized offline in pen-and-paper format. Example questions: (1) Critically compare and discuss open and closed innovation models; (2) Define and discuss the most important characteristics and advantages of ambidextrous organizations. In each retake, students may earn maximum 60 points for the exam. Discussion engagement and team project presentation points are not annulled in any moment, i.e., final grade is calculated on the basis of total number of points earned for the exam and the team assignments (20 points + 20 points + 60 points = 100 points). 
  • non-blocking In-class discussion
    Discussion engagement: 4 * 5 points (20 points in total) There will be four discussion classes during the course. Discussions will be focused on the different aspects of the management of technological innovation, e.g., development of technological innovation strategy, sources of innovation, value creation and appropriation of benefits from innovation, and building the innovative organization. To prepare for discussion classes, students will be required to prepare their pre-discussion notes (i.e., 5 key learning points from provided articles – max 250 words). NOTE: There is no retake for this assignment. This is an in-class activity and cannot be completed retroactively. Only students who submit their notes before the class and participate in the discussions are eligible for max 5 points for their engagement in each of the four discussion classes: - Identification and characterization of 5 key learning points (50%) - Engagement in the discussion during the seminar (50%)
