Abstract

Copyright Law in the Media and Entertainment Industry explores the legal framework governing the protection and use of creative works in the media, entertainment and fashion industry. This course provides an in-depth comparative analysis of copyright statutes and case law of the United States, European Union, India, China and Russia. Students will examine the principles underlying copyright protection, including the rights of authors and creators, limitations and exceptions to copyright, fair use, copyright protection, IP deals, licensing and transactions, secondary liability regimes and the impact of technology on copyright law. This course will allow students to delve deeper into the specifics of the business processes of the media and entertainment industry, as well as the to teach them critical thinking and problem solving skills, particularly within the framework of practical sessions and organizing a moot court as a final assessment. The course will be taught in English language. All classes are interactive, with case studies and open discussions of the most landmark industry cases".

Learning Objectives

Brief description of the course: This course is prepared for lawyers who are capable of effective practical activity, analytical and research work in the field of intellectual property law in the music industry. During the course, students will get acquainted with the basic provisions of copyright and related law, as well as with the legal aspects of the application of legal norms within the music industry. The program consists of 5 classes, within which issues of the protection of musical works, the legal regime of objects of related rights (performances and phonograms), contracts for the disposal of musical content and individual mechanisms for the registration of relations between participants in the music industry will be considered. Among other things, students will get acquainted with collective rights management organizations, as well as the consequences of violating exclusive rights to music content.
