Course Syllabus

Abstract

In the course "Effective Communication," students will learn how to apply critical thinking to become more effective communicators both in everyday life and professional settings. By actively participating in speaking assignments, writing reflective journals, and analyzing a variety of spoken and written texts such as documentaries, commercials, and music videos, students will not only enhance their English language skills but also develop their reasoning abilities and make better judgments about the information presented to them in any format. The course also emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and the opportunity for students to correct their thinking habits.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Reflection journal
    20% Students submit their reflection journals after covering Topics 1 and 2. This assignment involves answering questions that prompt reflection on how the ideas, concepts, and vocabulary studied in the course can be applied to real-life situations.
  • non-blocking Final Assignments
    220% Final assignments are conducted after Topics 1 and 2 have been covered. These assignments encompass the following components: Text Analysis (Topic 1) and Debates (Topic 2). During the Debates, students participate on either the affirmative or negative team. The Text Analysis requires students to select a text and analyze it using the critical thinking concepts, principles, and ideas acquired throughout the course. Students will also present the results of their analyses to the class.
  • non-blocking Group discussions
    20% Group discussions revolve around a selected video, either a film or a documentary. Students are expected to participate in the discussion and complete either a pre-discussion or post-discussion prompt.
  • non-blocking Project work
    20% Project work involves taking part in one of the projects described below: Option 1: Recording a podcast. Students or teams record a podcast, where they engage in thoughtful discussions about ideas and topics covered in the course as well as in the discussion of the results obtained after studying students’ own research question. Option 2: Designing interventions to combat the spread of myths. Students create short videos to debunk myths or misleading theories.
  • non-blocking Final Reflection Paper
    20%: Final Reflection Paper Students write a reflection paper in which they reflect on the course ideas and their application to real life.
