Course Syllabus
Abstract
The "Energy Policy in the post-Soviet Countries" is a course aimed at providing students with basic knowledge of energy policy and post-Soviet countries as energy actors. It aims to discuss the main current energy crises, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, Eurasian energy governance, and the role of post-Soviet countries in the international energy system.
Learning Objectives
- To give students a comprehensive overview of types of energy, the main features of energy policy in post-Soviet countries, and the role of post-Soviet countries in the international energy system
- To develop basic skills of understanding and interpreting the role of post-Soviet countries in the international energy market
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Identifies and defines the main types of energy sources;
- Enumerates and describes the main features of Eurasian energy policy and the role of post-Soviet countries in the international energy market;
- Characterizes and analyzes the main external and internal challenges and threats to the future of energy policy in post-Soviet countries;
Course Contents
- Topic 1. Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy. Energy Resource Base in Russia and post-Soviet countries.
- Topic 2. Russia, Post-Soviet Countries and Climate Change.
- Topic 3. Russia, Post-Soviet Countries and Energy in Europe.
- Topic 4. Russia, Post-Soviet Countries and Energy in Asia.
- Topic 5. Russia, Post-Soviet Countries and Energy in Africa.
Assessment Elements
- SeminarsFor each class, students should read academic papers from a provided list or additional texts and be able to discuss the topics. Seminars constitute 40% of the final grade.
- Quiz
- Group ProjectsIn the last class, students should present their group projects. The list of topics will be provided in advance. The speech time limit is 10-20 minutes. A group project constitutes 20% of the final grade.
- ExamThe examination is carried out in a written form. Students will be provided with the final list of questions in advance. During the exam, a student receives a question card with two questions and is to write an essay based on these questions. It constitutes 20% of the final grade. The student may be exempted from the exam if his cumulated grade is 4 or higher.
