Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed to equip students with practical skills in policy analysis and policy paper writing, tailored for various audiences. To achieve this, the course integrates hands-on workshops on policy paper writing and discussions on applied policy analysis techniques with the study of key concepts and theories in policy studies, alongside an exploration of the unique challenges and dynamics of policymaking and governance in post-Soviet contexts.The course is structured into three comprehensive blocks:Foundations of Policy Studies: This block introduces students to essential concepts, models, and theories in policy studies, providing a solid theoretical grounding.Governance and Policymaking in Post-Soviet States: The second block delves into the distinctive features of governance and policymaking in post-Soviet states, offering insights into the regional context.Applied Policy Analysis: Building on the foundational knowledge from the first two blocks, this section focuses on applied policy analysis, equipping students with the skills necessary to conduct real-world policy analysis and produce high-quality policy papers.

Assessment Elements

    The instructor grades the participation in discussions, answers to instructor’s questions and overall involvement in the in-class activities and group work.
  • non-blocking Policy paper
    The final project for the course is a policy paper of one of the types discussed in the course. The word count is 1,500 words (+/- 10%).
  • non-blocking Test
    The test covers the theoretical material discussed throughout the course.
