Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Exam
Students prepare their individual research proposals and present them during the exam. The structure of the proposal should include at least the following items: 1. Research problem/question 2. Relevance of the research 3. Definition of the object of study and units of analysis 4. Hypotheses (derived from the literature) 5. Sampling strategy 6. Type of data 7. Methods of data gathering and analysis 8. Preliminary research tools (e.g., questionnaire, interview guide, observation template, etc.)
  • non-blocking Discussion participation
Students need to (1) participate in classroom discussions. For example: Read a paper, provide a summary of it, and answer questions to demonstrate understanding. Students need (2) to formulate critical questions for the projects presented by their classmates. These questions should demonstrate a student’s ability to apply the theory from the mandatory readings to the empirical cases discussed by the presenting group. A student needs to give a summary, answer a question and ask one question to their teammates during 75% of all seminars in the given semester to receive a grade of “10.” If a student participates in less than 75% of the classroom discussions, they receive a grade proportional to the number of participations. For example, if a student participates in 15 out of 20 discussions, they receive a grade of “10.” If a student participates in 7 out of 20 discussions, they receive a grade of “5.”
  • non-blocking Group project
Students need to prepare presentations in working teams based on the mandatory reading. For example: Read an article about Bourdieu and his tradition in the sociology of art. Apply these ideas to create a research design with the purpose of studying cultural consumption in Russia. Each presentation is graded on a 10-point HSE scale. The final group project grade is the average of the grades received during the academic year.
