Course Syllabus

Abstract

In the age of postindustrial society, postmodern culture and digitalization, the political sphere is getting increasingly mediatized which results, for instance, in the merger of political and media elites. The course is focused on various aspects of political communications and sheds light on how media cover and at the same time shape domestic and foreign politics of different actors, including states, international organizations and a variety of non-governmental agents. Students of this course will be given theoretical and practical tools to critically analyze relevant political agenda formed by opinion leaders, bloggers and professional journalists via traditional and new media outlets. These comprise print and online newspapers, radio and podcasts, TV and YouTube channels as well as different digital platforms, etc.

  • 1. Familiarization of students with the key debates and trends in contemporary media studies as well as communication theory at the intersection with political science.
  • 2. The ability to practically implement this theoretical apparatus in media production and media analytics.

Assessment Elements

    Students' participation assessment is based on their contributions during class discussions, their engagement with the course material and classmates and the quality of the completed hometasks. Students will have the opportunity to improve their participation grade throughout the semester by actively engaging in discussions, asking and answering questions as well as demonstrating a willingness to learn from the instructor and their peers.
  • non-blocking Journalistic materials - 0,3
    The students are expected to write 2-5 journalistic texts in different genres, ranging from hard news stories to opinion pieces. The size of the text is 1000-4500 characters with spaces. The final score is the average score for all materials. In case some of the materials are not done, the average score is calculated from the sum of the total number of papers that the student had to submit within the framework of this control element.
  • non-blocking Final Project - 0,4
    The students are expected to create individually or in small groups (2-5 persons) an analytical article, expert interview, multimedia longread, video, podcast, series of posts for social media or any other material relevant to the current social or political agenda. The topic, format and genre should be chosen and discussed with the tutor in advance.
