Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course teaches practice skills of academic writing to facilitate students’ effective communication within transnational academia. Exploring major writing conventions, at this seminar students perfect techniques of producing scholarly texts in English. Ultimately, a firm foundation for students to further evolve as authors is established.
Learning Objectives
- The course objectives are: formation and development of foreign language competence necessary for relevant solutions of communicative tasks in various situations of academic and professional communication, formation of socio-cultural competence and behavioral stereotypes necessary for successful adaptation of graduates in the labor market; development of students' ability to independently acquire knowledge to carry out everyday, professional and scientific communication in English; development of the ability to acquire knowledge on how to in everyday, professional and scientific environment in English.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students know the genre peculiarities of professional and academic texts
- Students know the academic vocabulary and its necessary for communication in the academic environment
- Students know the logic of conducting a scientific research, choosing a research topic
- Students know the logic of constructing a scientific text and parts of the text: essay, outline, outline of a speech, summary of an article, paragraph of an essay, annotation, expert evaluation of the text, list of sources (APA style)
- Students know the stylistic features of professional and academic texts
- Students know the approaches to peer review of an academic text and to discussing the text with the author
- Students are able to manage their own writing process such as prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, editing; develop the effective use of language for unity and coherence in their writing
- Students are able to use sources responsibly for argument support, avoid plagiarism of any nature, and format their text properly in the APA style
- Students are able to employ various strategies for the final (polishing) stage of their writing thus providing for better quality writing; they are able to be responsible proof readers for their classmates
- Students know about the perspectives of academic writing skills in their future career development
