From the very beginning, the Higher School of Economics has been unique among Russian universities in terms of its openness to the world, and a recent open air day in Gorky Park is just one more example of this. For the first time, not only prospective students and their parents, but literally the ‘man in the street’ were all able to get information about the HSE, attend lectures by some of the best professors and guest experts, and, the most important, to actually see the people who make up the university. And all of this happened in a place named ‘HSE Land’ by the organizers, in the open air on the bank of the Moskva River in a beautiful park setting.

In June this year, the international school ‘Integrating Europe through Human Rights: comparing the exercise of basic freedoms’ took place at the HSE. The event was a joint initiative between the HSE and the University of Bologna and organized by the HSE Department of Public Policy.

On June 29^th 2012, the latest regular session of the Higher School of Economics Academic Council took place at the HSE. The agenda included information on the launch of new faculties and departments, approval of certain regulatory documents, as well as the results of the voting process for the teaching staff competition.

On June 19^th Charles Buxton, manager of regional programmes in Central Asia and post-Soviet countries of the International NGO Training & Research Centre — INTRAC, spoke at the HSE on ‘Civil Society at a Crossroads: View from the Development Sector’ at a seminar organized by the HSE Center for Studies of Civil Society and Nonprofit Sector (CSCSNS).

On May 25^th Michael McFaul, US Ambassador in Russia, professor at Stanford University, gave an open lecture to the students of the Higher School of Economics.

On May 21^st 2011, Robert Aumann, Nobel laureate in economics and Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, spoke at the HSE on ‘Rule Rationality vs. Act Rationality’. The lecture was organized by the HSE together with the Embassy of Israel in Russia.

On April 4^th the second plenary session of the 13^th April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development took place at the HSE Cultural Center.

On April 3rd the 13th April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development opened at the HSE Cultural Center. The topic of its first plenary session was the strategy of development for Russia.
