Course Syllabus

Abstract

This advanced level Indonesian language course (Advanced Course) is designed for non-native learners of Indonesian who have taken approximately three years of regularly paced college-level Indonesian. It aims to acquire and improve skills in the main types of translation, considering the specifics of intercultural communication. The overall goal of this course is to bring students’ Indonesian proficiency to an advanced level and help them develop an active command of authentic reading materials. At the end of the course students will achieve C1 level according to the CEFR.

  • To improve basic direct and reverse translation techniques, considering the specifics of intercultural and inter language communication;
  • To improve and systematize Indonesian language skills by means of comparing the systems of the original language and the language of written translation;
  • To develop skills and proficiency in the main types of translation;
  • To enhance knowledge in linguistic and regional studies on the basis of topical issues of our times
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students have the ability to select and apply adequate translation strategies in accordance with the type of translation. Students are able to use the basic translation models and translation transformations when analyzing the translation process and its results.
  • Students can adequately uses stable phrases, idioms within the studied topics;
  • Students can recognize speech levels: official, unofficial, neutral, etc. Students are able to recognize linguistic markers of social relations and use them (greeting, farewell, emotional exclamation, etc.)
  • Students have listening skills of authentic foreign language speech within the studied topics, transmitted by various channels (from a live voice to audio and video recordings); know how to choose and adequately use the word depending on the context within the studied topics
  • Students are able to determine the intentionality of the translated text; to define keywords and basic units of thesauruses.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Unit tests
    Description: The test consists of two parts: 1) Writing test (lexico-grammatical test, vocabulary test, sentences or texts for translation from Russian to Malaysian / from Malaysian to Russian); 2) Interview (students are required to talk to instructors on the topic of the Unit / read, retell text and answer questions). The format and the topics of the test are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
  • non-blocking Homework
    Description: After every class, you will receive a homework assignment to practice new grammar and vocabulary. It can include the following: 1 Grammar exercises; 2 Online activities for vocabulary practice (www.quizzlet.com. Learningapps.org); 3 Dialogue: You are required to listen to the dialogue and learn it by heart or repeat after audio not looking in the text or listen and fill in the blanks. 4 Text: You are required to read or retell a text using the phrases from the text, and answer questions. 5 Writing text using given vocabulary and grammar.
  • non-blocking In-class assignment
    Description: In-class assignment includes quizzes, dialogue practice, conversations, group discussions etc. Quizzes can be given during the first 15 minutes of a class.

    Description: Exam consists of the writing test (writing an essay on one of the topics covered during the course, translation from Russian to Malaysian, translation from Malaysian to Russian, vocabulary test) and the oral part (Reading and interpreting text, translation from Malaysian or Russian and grammar rule retelling covered during the semester). Students are expected to use words, expressions & grammar learned in the class during the conversation.
