Course Syllabus

Abstract

During the course “Islamic Political Culture” students will gain an understanding of the formation and theoretical background of political culture in the Muslim world, its sources, as well as classical and modern interpretations. The basic political concepts in Islam, the influence of Islamic religious doctrine on the political process in the Muslim world will be touched upon. Special attention is paid to considering the problems of political participation of Muslims in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries.

  • The aim of the course “Islamic Political Culture” is to form students' understanding of the formation and theoretical prerequisites of political culture in the Muslim world, its sources, as well as classical and modern interpretations. Based on the material covered, the student will have the ability to develop a political-cultural understanding of power in Islamic societies. The course will focus on the essence and distinctive features of political culture in Asian and African countries, its structure and functions, rational and irrational components, universal and private characteristics.

  • - introduction to the subject, general knowledge of scientific approaches to history of Islam
  • Student analyzes the historical background of the emergence of the main trends in Islam, their differences, similarities and evolution
  • student analyzes the different approaches to the concept of political power in Islamic political philosophy
  • Student analyses classical and modern approaches to the conceptualization of the state in the Islamic political and legal tradition
  • Student studies main forms of political participation in Arab-Muslim political culture.
  • Student analyzes the history of the emergence of the secular and the process of secularization in the Islamic world, as well as the relationship between the secular and the religious in discursive practices.

  • Topic 1. The origin of Islam. Genesis of basic concepts. The main points of Muslim dogmatics. Sources of Islam.
  • Topic 2: Strains in Islam. Main differences.
  • Topic 3: The concept of power in Arab-Muslim culture.
  • Topic 4: Ideas about the state and sovereignty in Islamic political philosophy.
  • Topic 5: Political change and political participation in Arab-Muslim culture.
  • Topic 6: Secularism in the Islamic World
Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Intermediate control Test
    Test on first topics about the pillars, basic concepts and history of Islam. 10 questions of different format.
  • non-blocking Group Presentation
    Presentations in the groups of 2-3 students. Topics could be either proposed by the students themselves or by the teacher. Each presentation also should contain 2-3 question for further discussion.
  • non-blocking Final Test
    The test covers the lecture material and home assignments. It includes 15 multiple-choice questions (1 point each) and three open questions (5 points each).
