On March 12 and 13 the Faculty of Economic Sciences at HSE hosted Professor Cristina Rovera of the University of Turin who delivered two lectures about crowdfunding. ‘Russia and Italy can share our experiences, activities, and professional research,’ the Italian professor noted. ‘Last year, Professor Irina Ivashkovskaya (HSE) came to Italy to teach Corporate Finance. This marked the beginning of a profitable relationship, and I hope it turns into something long-term.’

An advent calendar with gifts is usually seen as a source of entertainment for children, but away with conventions. Everyone loves to receive presents, but HSE loves to give them. Each day between December 1st and 24th, the windows of a virtual calendar will display links to some of HSE’s most interesting courses, lectures, and events set to take place soon, as well as recordings from past events. The result will be 24 presents for absolutely everyone to enjoy.

In October, Zorica Skakun, from Oxfam GB in Syria, led two workshops on various aspects of violence against women for students of the ‘Population and Development’ Master’s programme. During the workshops, Ms Skakun gave an overview of international frameworks, mandates, and programmes aimed to end violence against women (VAW) and help survivors in various settings, including conflict zones and refugee camps. The students were also offered a group exercise where they brainstormed and presented ideas for pre-project problem analysis and activities to combat VAW in Syria.

She shared her impressions of the Perm campus and spoke about the prospects for cooperation between the universities in the near future.

On October 21, the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities hosted a lecture entitled ‘Classics in the Modern Age: Online Opera Fans Battle for the Enigmatic Russian Soul’. Delivered by Emily Erken, Lecturer of Musicology at The Ohio State University’s School of Music, her lecture covered the peculiarities of Runet contributors in their reactions to contemporary productions of classic operas. Among other topics, her lecture addressed how Russians today are seeking to rethink the moral identity of the country in which they live and how representatives from a number of cultural groups present their current views as a natural development of the national heritage.
